“Tim’s Take” on Facebook

Facebook, UC Davis student Tim Kerbavaz says, is “a platform for connecting and interacting with real-world friends online. It’s not a place to meet new people; it’s for keeping up with people from a distance."

As Tim’s definition implies, most people are comfortable using Facebook in their personal lives as a way to connect with distant friends. But a big question most people have is, “Facebook for work?”

At the end of the day, it comes down to audience. What sorts of things do you want to share with what sorts of people? If you’re uncomfortable allowing your personal and professional life blur, you can take advantage of Facebook’s publishing options (only publish some posts to “close friends”), or you can open multiple accounts (you need a different email address for each account).
