Dr. James Carey to Speak on Lecture Capture and Online Course Development at Paris Conference

Dr. James R. Carey

Dr. James R. Carey, professor of entomology at the University of California, Davis, has been invited to a worldwide conference in Paris. Through speaking at a session on innovative science teaching and participating in a “how-to” workshop, Carey will discuss how he launched the UC research seminar network on UCTV and how the concept can be expanded and applied to European scientists. He also will relate how he developed a popular online course for undergraduates, “Terrorism and War.”

The conference, sponsored by the Center for Research and Interdisciplinarity (CRI), Faculty of Medicine, University of Paris, Descartes, and held on July 13-15, will draw CRI faculty and students, 20 international speakers from five continents and officials from the French ministry.

Several years ago, when Carey chaired the UC Systemwide Committee on Research Policy, he sought a strategic approach to record, broadcast, and archive the hundreds of seminars that take place weekly on the 10 UC campuses. In a pilot program, he and his graduate students used Camtasia to record UC Davis Department of Entomology seminars and other seminars on the UC campus. They then uploaded them to the UCTV Seminars website. The research seminar network now extends to all 10 campuses, all of which allow free public access.
