MOOC Faculty Panel Notes

DSC_4168_1We had a great faculty panel last Friday! The topic was Massive Open Online Courses. Dr. John Owens, electrical and computer engineering, shared his experience with developing and teaching a MOOC on Parallel Computing; he worked with Udacity and the course was first offered in winter 2013. Dr. Norm Matloff, computer science, also shared his perspective on MOOCs, arguing that these online courses are not equivalent to face-to-face courses and should not be offered for college credit. We also received several excellent questions from the faculty attendees about just-in-time learning, peer-to-peer learning, and the relationship between UC Davis and online education.
