Upcoming Event: DOLCE this Friday (February 7)

We hope you’ll join us this coming Friday, February 7 at 12pm in 1310 Surge III for our monthly Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education (DOLCE) meeting.

Professors Lisa Rapalyea and Nicole Polen-Petit of the Department of Human Ecology will present on “Improving Attendance and Academic Performance Utilizing Clickers and Online Tools.” As their presentation title indicates, Rapalyea and Polen-Petit have been using a combination of teaching technologies for the purpose of improving class attendance, reading assigned materials, and studying that has resulted in higher examination grades, overall, for the 500+ enrollment Human Sexuality course. The data they present will show exam grades without any technologies used compared with data from courses where a combination of technologies and teaching tools were used. The presentation will also include discussion regarding observations on effectiveness, challenges and future directions/plans.

Joshua Hori of the Student Disability Center will also join us and demonstrate tools that help make coursework more accessible to students, including WAVE and AMP (solutions to scanning website accessibility), and SensusAccess (a service to convert documents into more accessible formats).

Finally, Steve Oerding (Academic Technology Services) will give a brief presentation on our new Faculty Graphics Workstation.

We also welcome you to join us at the upcoming meeting of the Learning Management System Transition Working Group on today (Thursday, Feb 6) at 3pm in 1310 Surge III. Please send us a note (or just join us) if you would like to take part in this discussion about eventual potential replacements for Sakai, the engine that powers SmartSite. We welcome additional faculty participation!
