DOLCE: Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education Featuring Melinda Livas and Tricia Salata on Instructional Technology Tools -- Feb 3 at noon!

Dear Colleagues,

I write to invite you to our February 3rd DOLCE (Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education) meeting in 1310 Surge III / The Grove, at which time we will hear from two experts on instructional technology tools and practices.

Melinda M. Livas, MS, MLIS, MA, is a Physical Sciences & Engineering Librarian, as well as an instructional technologist with a passion for online teaching and learning. As instructional design becomes increasingly important to the success of our face-to-face, web-enhanced, hybrid, and online courses, we will look to many sources of support of our campus instructional technology efforts. We are lucky that Ms. Livas has this expertise to share with the campus community.

During this DOLCE meeting, Ms. Livas will introduce a number of instructional technology applications, and help lead a discussion about the new ways we can start to imagine engaging with our students. We will also discuss the extent to which our learning management system Canvas can replicate the functions of some of these tools. If there is significant faculty interest, we can also investigate the extent to which Canvas can work with the following tools in the future. They include the following:

Padlet- One of the most collaborative, online bulletin boards available. Extremely intuitive, and easy to use.

Screencastify- Quickly create screencasts using a chrome extension.

ScreencastOmatic- design clear screen recordings on the fly.

Tildee- Create mini tutorials on the fly, and easily share with peers.

Haiku-Deck-   Create presentations with 40 million free images at your fingertips.

Prezi- a uniquely different platform for presenting, and sharing content.

Because clickers are teaching tools that have been widely-adopted at UC Davis, I’ve asked a representative from our primary clicker vendor, i>clicker/REEF to join us at the February 3 DOLCE. Tricia Salata has taught English at five colleges and universities before joining i>clicker, and she will be given the last ten minutes or so of our hour to discuss best practices and new uses of clicker technologies.

Please join us at this event on Friday, February 3rd for this wide ranging discussion of instructional technologies and pedagogical excellence. And please share this with colleagues whom you think would benefit from reviewing the topics we cover.

Best,

Andy Jones
