June 2nd DOLCE on Instructional Use of Video -- join us in 1310 Surge III / The Grove
Dear Colleagues,
I write to invite you to our June 2nd DOLCE (Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education) meeting in 1310 Surge III / The Grove, at which time we will hear from two experts on instructional technology tools and practices. This will be our last DOLCE of the school year – looking to the future, Dr. Margaret Merrill and Steve Faith will talk about instructional use of video and lecture capture, respectively.
When used well, instructional videos can help students actively engage with content in support of their learning. Dr. Margaret Merrill, an instructional designer at Academic Technology Services, will share insights from research about the benefits and best practices for use of instructional videos in face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online courses. She will provide tips about how instructors can plan for how their use of videos will minimize unnecessary cognitive load and maximize student engagement and active learning.
Instructional technologist Steve Faith will discuss lecture capture. More and more courses at UC Davis are taking advantage of Lecture Capture services offered through Academic Technology Services. While we have become technically proficient at capturing and delivering content, what are the pedagogical ramifications of offering video lectures to students attending in-person classes? Does attendance change? Is this a substitute for face-to-face class meetings? What advantages or disadvantages accompany this technology? With Steve’s guidance, we will learn about the state of Lecture Capture, review some recent research, and hear stories from instructors that have used this technology.
