October 20th Faculty Forum on Peer Review -- Noon in 1310 Surge III/The Grove

 

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

At noon on October 20th, in 1310 Surge III/The Grove, the first Faculty Forum of the 2017-2018 school year will feature Kory Ching and other UC Davis faculty discussing peer review, its benefits (some would say its necessity), and technologies that support peer review in the classroom.

Dr. Kory Ching is an assistant professor for the University Writing Program. His research interests include digital literacies and the practice of using peer response groups in the writing classroom. Dr. Ching teaches undergraduate courses focusing on writing in digital environments, ethnographic fieldwork, and video game analysis. Whereas peer review draft workshops have been a staple of writing classrooms for decades, faculty in other disciplines are increasingly turning to forms of this practice in order to distribute assessment responsibilities, encourage iterative revision of students’ ideas and arguments, and build community in large classes. To take an example from the physical sciences, UCLA Chemistry professor Orville Chapman used a National Science Foundation grant to develop a calibrated peer review system that allowed him to assign frequent writing assignments without significantly growing his workload. We will discuss other such examples on Friday.
