February 2nd at Noon: DOLCE Talk on Empowering Students with Canvas

Dear Colleagues,

On Friday, February 2nd, we will hear two DOLCE presentations that I think will intrigue you. Dr. Ted Geier from American Studies will be speaking on “Using Canvas to Empower Students.” As I have discussed with students in my journalism class this quarter, verbs like “transform,” “inspire,” and, Dr. Geier’s choice, “empower” are more typically used by politicians than by reporters. As faculty, we should also consider how best to verbalize our high hopes for our students. I hope you will join me to see how our learning management system can be used to help students accomplish our learning goals for them, as weill as their own aspirational goals.

Secondly, we will hear from members of the UC Davis Share You team, staff members at Academic Technology Services who are spearheading an initiative to use multimedia tools to record and present messages of diversity, inclusion, and, again, empowerment among students, faculty, and staff at UC Davis. We have found that whenever faculty try out such tools, they find them more accessible when integrating their use into their teaching. Find out more about the Share You initiative at http://shareyou.ucdavis.edu.

We meet Friday, February 2nd at noon in 1310 Surge III / The Grove. We hope you can join us!

Best,

Andy Jones
