Audio Interview with Spanish Professor Robert Blake on Teaching with Technology

Robert Blake, a distinguished professor of Spanish and the Director of the Davis Language Center, joined me for the Spring quarter audio blog entry. Our discussion covered a variety of topics ranging from Robert Blake’s training graduate students to teaching online courses to providing audio and visual feedback via UC Davis Canvas.

In this audio blog entry, Robert Blake chronicles his professional journey as it relates to instructional technology and teaching online. It all began in 1984 when he was an assistant professor at Dartmouth College and was given a Macintosh. Inspired by the graphic interface, Professor Blake could imagine applications to support student learning. Today, he has been growing the online and hybrid offerings of language courses at UC Davis. In training graduate students to teach online, he notes the importance of formal and experiential knowledge. The online courses are composed of many different technologies, so teaching these course requires a knowledge of different technologies, including synchronous video conferencing tools as well as UC Davis Canvas. As Blake says “There’s a lot of pieces that go into it and you have to know your subject area… it’s complicated.”

Robert Blake also discusses the upcoming third edition of his book Brave New Digital Classroom (2019), which explores instructional technologies and the teaching of languages.

Please enjoy this opportunity to hear first-hand from one of our leading campus experts on instructional technology and online education.
