March 1st DOLCE on Accessibility and Technology for Human Rights

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

The last DOLCE of Winter quarter takes place this Friday, March 1st, in 1310 Surge III / The Grove. DOLCE will begin with an introduction by Meggan Levitt, the new Assistant Vice Provost and Associate Chief Information Officer for Academic Applications at UC Davis. We at Academic Technology Services are excited to have her join our team given her extensive experience leading technology initiatives in higher education.

We will then be joined by Human Rights Studies Director and professor Keith David Watenpaugh. Earlier this month, Professor Watenpaugh was awarded a centennial medal by The Institute of International Education for his Article 26 Backpack project. According to the press release, Article 26 Backpack “uses face-to-face counseling and cloud-based technology to help refugees and other displaced people document and share their educational accomplishments. Launched in June 2018, Article 26 Backpack already has about 1,000 people using it.”

Finally, Joshua Hori, accessible technology specialist, will also join us and present his talk “TechVersity: Diverse technologies used to make courses more inclusive.” As faculty, we all work diligently to provide all students in our courses opportunities for success. Joshua Hori’s insight on integrating technologies to make our courses more inclusive will provide resources and approaches that can guide us in this quest. For more support, Accessibility at UC Davis provides a wide-range of information including “10 Things Faculty Can Do to Increase Accessibility of Their Classes.”

It’ll be exciting to see if we can fit all of this into one hour! Please join us for the last DOLCE of Winter quarter 2019 this Friday March 1st at noon in 1310 Surge III/The Grove.

Best,

Dr. Andy Jones
