Audio from March 15th Faculty Forum on Week-One Technology Strategies

Happy Spring Break! As Spring quarter begins in less than a week, I wanted to share with you the audio from last week’s faculty forum on “Week-One Technology Strategies: How best to communicate with your students before you ‘meet’ them, and what technology use policies to share on your syllabus.” In case you were unable to attend, the discussion on this topic may be helpful in the preparation of Spring quarter (and future quarter) classes.

Faculty who attended represented a wide-range of departments including microbiology, psychology, evolution and ecology, earth planetary science, and political science. Class sizes discussed ranged from less than 100 to 300-700 students. The topics discussed include:
  • Integrating short, introductory videos on topics such as how to use Canvas or how to annotate articles
  • Helping students master concepts through review of lecture capture videos
  • Using surveys to get to know students before or during the first class
  • Tips for memorizing students’ names
  • Using common questions to design clicker questions for subsequent iterations of the course
  • Incentivizing office hours
Please join us at Spring quarter DOLCEs and Faculty Forums beginning April 5th.

Best, Andy Jones
