Audio and Video for February 7th DOLCE

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

The video and audio from the February 7th DOLCE are now available!

DOLCE began with Naomi Janowitz’s, Religious Studies, talk titled “Facebook, Google, Canvas and You: A professor/student perspective on ethical use of technology.” Dr. Janowitz began her talk with an interactive activity in which audience members chose between four corners of the room that represented their self-selected groups: happy cyborg, unhappy cyborg, lurking luddite, and relaxed luddite. This activity, filled with laughter, prompted discussions among the “cornered” participants about various uses of technologies and was followed by reflective questions prompting considerations of how we respond to ethical questions about uses of technologies in our everyday lives.

Then John Goldberg, Graduate School of Management, presented his talk on “Virtual Exchange.” Goldberg shared his use of virtual exchanges which facilitated mentorship between students across the world. These virtual exchanges mirrored the work his students could expect upon graduation, and helped to prepare them for working on international teams. In these virtual exchanges, student teams created projects with impressive results. For example, one team created a plan to use a dissolving agent to recycle styrofoam into flower pots.

DOLCE concluded with an update on Gradescope, a feedback and assessment tool, presented by Steve Faith. In this short discussion, Steve reiterated the benefits of using Gradescope for horizontal grading. If you are interested in using Gradescope to streamline your grading load, please contact Steve at faith@ucdavis.edu to schedule a one-on-one consultation.

Best,
