March 6th DOLCE This Friday: Flipped Classrooms and Interactive Webinars

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

Please join us this Friday, March 6th at DOLCE: Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education. The March 6th DOLCE will feature faculty presentations on flipped classrooms and hosting interactive webinars. We will then engage in a closing discussion about resources that can support faculty teaching in the coronavirus era.

Sara Dye, Plant Pathology, will present her talk “Hosting Lively and Interactive Webinars.” As educators in the 21st century, faculty have discovered that hosting lively and interactive webinars can benefit our classroom teaching by supporting student learning through increased interaction and providing students a model of interactive webinars that they can emulate in their own careers. In addition to supporting our work as educators, learning how to host lively webinars can also benefit our work sharing our research with the broader community.

Greg Pasternack, Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources, will then present his talk “Challenges and Opportunities with Individualizing Education in a Flipped Classroom.” The use of instructional technologies can often support an effective use of flipped classrooms with strategic use of technologies such as instructional video, web-conferencing software like Zoom, or Canvas discussions to support effective online discussion. Given the potential of instructional technologies to support flipping a classroom, Greg Pasternack’s talk will provide insight on how to use technologies to leverage the potential of a flipped classroom for individualized education.

While we continue to monitor coronavirus, as instructional technology devotees, we invite all teaching faculty to consider ways instructional technologies might help us move student learning beyond the confines of the classroom. With these opportunities in mind, both Greg Pasternack and Sara Dye will discuss ways faculty can leverage technologies to move learning online. We hope you will participate in the discussion after the two presentations.

We look forward to an interactive and lively discussion this Friday, March 6th at DOLCE in 1310 The Grove.

Best,

Dr. Andy Jones
