Virtual DOLCE April 2020 : Videos Now Available!

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

In light of social distancing and shelter-in-place recommendations, DOLCE has gone virtual! Each month this quarter, your colleagues will share pre-recorded video presentations on educational technologies and remote teaching strategies.

This month, Mark Verbitksy, Department of Political Science, recorded his talk “Modelling Critical Reading Skills.” His talk provides insight into using technologies strategically to support a particular pedagogical goal -- in this case, helping students develop critical reading skills.

Heather Hether, Department of Communication, recorded two videos for her presentation “Facilitate Peer Learning with PeerWise and Canvas Peer Review.” Her “Introduction to PeerWise” demonstrates how she uses the tool PeerWise to engage students in a novel way in their learning. PeerWise provides an online platform for students to create questions about weekly readings as opposed to students completing weekly quizzes on readings. Having students create questions themselves provides a novel way to gauge students’ understanding while creating communities of learning. In addition, the process of having students create questions increases critical engagement with material and fosters meaningful interactions between students and creates a valuable study source for midterm and finals. Dr. Hether also recorded “Introduction to Canvas Peer Review” which explores the use of the peer review option in Canvas.

Use #ucdavisdolce on Twitter to connect and discuss DOLCEs and Faculty Forums with your colleagues.

Please complete this brief survey so we can continue to refine and improve our DOLCE offerings. Also, please join us for a virtual faculty forum on Zoom on April 17th at noon. April’s faculty forum will be “Faculty Reflections on Teaching in the COVID-19 Era.”

Best,

Andy Jones
