About this talk: To address the coronavirus pandemic of Spring 2020, many schools have substituted online instruction for traditional face-to-face instruction. Yet the efficacy of online instruction remains uncertain. Here Dr. Bloom compares the performance of 1,523 undergraduates at the University of California at Davis taking either an online or face-to-face version of an introductory course on climate change. He discusses findings and implications for instruction based on his study.
About the presenter:

Arnold J. Bloom received a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University. For the last forty years, he has been on the faculty of the University of California at Davis. His publications range from major reviews on the economics of resource allocation in plants to the future of agriculture under rising carbon dioxide levels. He has co-authored textbooks on Plant Physiology and Plant Mineral Nutrition. The multi-media textbook Global Climate Change: Causes, Consequences, and Solutions derives from a General Education Course that he has offered for the past decade both in-person and online and has grown to an annual enrollment of nearly three hundred students.
