Who’s behind the Wheel?

The Wheel is a blog designed to provide information about educational technology so that faculty members at University of California, Davis don’t have to “reinvent the wheel” as they incorporate technology into their classrooms.

An Academic Technology Services initiative, The Wheel is produced by Academic Associate Director of Academic Technology Services, Dr. Andy Jones, and Mary Stewart, PhD student in the School of Education.

Dr. Andy Jones

Among other things, Dr. Andy works with SmartSite trainers and programmers, leads the monthly Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education (DOLCE) meetings and the monthly Faculty Forums, serves on the Educational Technology subcommittee of the Campus Council for Information Technology, and chairs the Learning Management System Working Group. This blog allows those areas to merge, bringing you up-to-date information about the field of educational technology and the resources available to you at UC Davis.

Mary Stewart

As part of her role as graduate student researcher for ATS, Mary writes much of the content on The Wheel, focusing on the following topics:

Educational Technology Innovations: Stay informed about the newest developments in the field of educational technology. We’ll also post tips and tricks for how you can better take advantage of the tools available to you through UC Davis.
Social Media: Social networks are an important way to connect with your students and with fellow faculty members. In this section we’ll share ways to use social media in higher education.
Meet the Staff: The dedicated professionals at ATS are here to answer your questions, address your concerns, and keep you informed about educational technology opportunities.
Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education (DOLCE): We meet on first Friday of the month at 12pm in 1310 Surge III. If you miss a meeting, you’ll find the minutes and video recordings of each meeting here.
Documentation: On SmartSite’s Support & Training page, you’ll find detailed PDFs and web pages that provide step-by-step instructions for various SmartSite tools. We’ll notify you of updates or new documents, and provided commentary on innovative ways to use SmartSite tools.
SmartSite Support: Every Tuesday from 10am-12pm, our faculty technology trainers offer SmartSite workshops. The trainers also welcome drop-ins on Monday (10am-12pm), Wednesday (2pm-4pm), and Thursday (2pm-4pm).
Audio & Video: Incorporating audio and video into your teaching is an increasingly important way to reach students. We’ll offer suggestions and examples of how fellow educators are meeting this need.
