ATS Stars Margaret Merrill and Alex Rockey Present New Research on Mobile Learning
In August two members of our ATS Faculty Support team, Instructional Designer Dr. Margaret Merrill, and Graduate Student Researcher Alex Rockey, will be making the trek down to San Diego to present at the University of California Computing Services Conference on a mobile learning research project on which they have been collaborating with three other UC campuses since August, 2016. Academic Technology Services prides itself on the quality of its staff, so we are pleased that the insight and research of two of our best will be recognized at this important conference.
Merrill and Rockey, along with instructional designers from UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC San Francisco, have been looking at support for and instructional use of mobile learning across the UC system by exploring what is happening on their respective campuses. While the research project itself is only in its beginning stages, the conference presentation will focus mostly on designing a cross-campus research project and the nuts and bolts of collaborating (including submitting IRB across multiple UC campuses) with a team that has never met in person. The team will also share some preliminary findings that illuminate the increase in mobile device usage on UC campuses as well as the increased infrastructure necessary to support this. The team will highlight ways instructors are taking advantage of the increasing number of mobile devices to improve classroom learning.
We expect to hear more from Merrill and Rockey on these topics after the presentation, as well as highlights from the presentations they attend.
