April 18th Faculty Forum on In-Class and Online Discussion Forums

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

On Friday, April 18th at noon (via Zoom), Academic Technology Services will be hosting a Faculty Forum on in-class and online discussions, discussion forums, and digital meeting rooms. Whether in the classroom, on UC Davis Canvas, or via tools like the online question and answer hub Piazza, discussion forums can promote peer learning, collaboration, and deep engagement. At this event, we will discuss strategies for engaging our students in peer instruction and community building.

In addition to hearing from UC Davis faculty who have created interpretive, collaborative, and goal-oriented forums online, we will also enjoy a presentation by Ryan Bradford from Piazza. Also an opera singer, Bradford will share a 30-minute bonus webinar introducing Piazza and showing attendees how the tool works to connect our students and create a community outside the classroom.

This April 18th Zoom event will be recorded with the recording to be shared the subsequent week on The Wheel. That said, we hope you can join us synchronously. Purposefully decentered, Faculty Forums emphasize our multidisciplinary faculty community as much as the answers to specific questions, so we look forward to hearing a panoply of perspectives, especially yours!

Whether at the start of the Picnic Day Parade, or on Friday, April 18th for our Zoom faculty forum, I look forward to encountering you sometime in the next week.

Best,

Dr. Andy Jones
Academic Director, Academic Technology Services
