October 6 DOLCE on Teaching with Video and Real-Time Online Assessments -- Noon in 1310 Surge III / The Grove

 

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome back to another year of teaching, and another round of faculty teaching events hosted by Academic Technology Services. For the last several years, Academic Technology Services has hosted noon events on the first and third Fridays of the month during the school year, opportunities for us to meet with our faculty colleagues to discuss teaching and technology.

At noon on Friday, October 6^th, in 1310 Surge III / The Grove, a meeting of DOLCE, Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education, will feature Jeff Mitchell, Jessica Chiartas, and a conversation with David Osleger and others.

Jeff Mitchell is a Cooperative Extension Cropping Systems Specialist in the Department of Plant Sciences.  His research and extension education focuses on conservation agriculture (CA) systems and their potential benefits for air, water and soil resource management, soil quality assessment, and the development and evaluation of sustainable crop production systems. Professor Mitchell will reprise his SITT 2017 talk on “Increasing Student Engagement with Video,” but with more time for questions and answers.

Accompanying Professor Mitchell will be Jessica Chiartas, a PhD candidate in the Department of Soil Science and Biogeochemistry. Before returning to graduate school at UC Davis, Chiartas worked with a major pharmaceutical sales company where she learned much about marketing and communication. At UC Davis, she has branched out from her core research on soil microbiology to include the important arena of science communication and the use of video to connect with and engage farmers.

Towards the end of the hour, we will also hear from David Osleger from Earth and Planetary Sciences. Also someone who teaches with video, this Academic Senate Undergraduate Distinguished Teaching Award recipient will take part in an informal discussion about having students take midterms and final exams in real time using student laptops and other devices, and UC Davis Canvas.
