Upcoming DOLCE Meeting: April 5 @ 12pm

I hope you will join us this Friday (April 5) at 12pm in 1310 Surge III for our monthly DOLCE [Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education] meeting, a forum for UC Davis faculty and other informed parties to share discoveries in innovative and effective teaching.

Professor Jim Carey will speak about his Terrorism and War class, which is being offered in a fully online format for the first time this quarter. Professor Carey is a campus authority on teaching with video, and using remote guest lecturers (via Skype, Adobe Connect, and other technologies).

Linguistics Graduate student Kristen Ware will discuss her experiences with developing a hybrid version of Linguistics I with Professor Patrick Farrell, winner of the Provost’s Hybrid Course Award.

Andy Jones will also give a brief presentation on the university’s initial investigation into learning management systems (LMS), and thus the future look and functionality of SmartSite. The faculty and staff that make up the steering committee of a LMS working group established by the Educational Technology Subcommittee of the Campus Council for Information Technology have just started to investigate Canvas, Desire2Learn, Moodle, and Blackboard as potential eventual alternatives to our existing platform (which is powered by Sakai).

Finally, we will hear from Isabel Porres, an Associate Instructor in Women and Gender Studies. She is conducting a Professors for the Future project that explores how social media can help foster discussion and stimulate critical thinking; she will discuss the upcoming conference on Social Media and the Interdisciplinary Classroom (2:10pm, April 10, 3201 Hart Hall).

As you probably know, Surge III is found two buildings west of the Silo. I hope you can join us Friday!
