Multiple Intelligences versus Learning Styles

In this interesting Washington Post article, Howard Gardner (the psychologist who developed the theory of multiple intelligences) distinguishes between multiple intelligences and learning styles. He argues that the idea of a “visual” or an “auditory” learner is problematic because different sensory experiences (e.g., listening to music versus listening to a lecture) engage our brains differently; what matters, Gardner argues, is not how the information reaches our brain, but what our brain does with that information once it is received. Gardner’s conclusion is that we should stop labeling our students as certain “types” of learners and instead individualize and pluralize (present information in multiple ways) our teaching.
