Hybrid & Online Learning: Getting the Terminology Straight

One of the huge challenges with hybrid and online learning is sorting out what we mean by all of the different terms. Many people use terms like “blended,” “web-enhanced,” “hybrid,” and “web-assisted” to describe courses that are not technology-free, but also not 100% virtual. Of course, the range between those terms is wide and at times problematic.

UCLA’s Online Instruction Resource Website offers a nice starting point for wading through the terminology. They define web-facilitated, hybrid/blended, online, flipped classroom, MOOCs, asynchronous, and synchronous. They also provide links to several journals relevant that focus on online learning.
