Audio and Video from April 5th DOLCE: Professor Walter Leal speaks on “How September 11th Changed the Way I Deliver Instruction”

Dear Faculty,

Audio and video are now available from April 5th’s DOLCE.

During this DOLCE, Walter Leal, distinguished professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, presented a talk titled “How September 11th Changed the Way I Deliver Instruction.” Walter Leal’s talk presents insights on how to integrate instructional video in a variety of ways to increase student engagement. His use of instructional video includes the following:

  • inviting renowned scholars from around the world as guest speakers into his class,
  • sharing introductory videos before the course even begins to prepare students for the expectations of the course as well as to allow students the opportunity to connect with their new professor, and
  • integrating video to explain difficult and complicated course concepts outside of class time.

Walter Leal’s talk combined an attention to student engagement and practical considerations when integrating video technologies provide a helpful perspective to any faculty member considering integrating instructional video into their own course.

DOLCE concluded with Dr. Andy Jones presenting an emergency closure resource developed by ATS to provide instructional technology strategies and support to faculty in the case of possible future campus closures. The emergency closure resource uses backwards design (Wiggins & McTiche, 2005) to provide additional learning activities to achieve the desired learning outcomes. Alternative learning activities described in the emergency closure resource include video lectures, audio lectures or podcasting, group discussions, communication with students, and peer collaboration.

While this resource is designed to support faculty in the case of future campus closures, the resources can be helpful at any time when considering adapting learning activities to the online environment. The discussion of this resource provided a number of helpful considerations, such as using Canvas to record audio and video.

Additionally, this resource will be presented at a session at the Summer Institute for Teaching and Technology (SITT) 2019 on September 13th.

Best, Alex
