February 21st Faculty Forum on Managing Large Classes

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

On Friday, February 21st at noon (via Zoom), Academic Technology Services will be hosting a Faculty Forum on teaching high-enrollment and labor-intensive classes. We are calling this event “Tech tools to the rescue: Managing large classes and overwhelming teaching and assessment workloads.”

We have all grappled with delivering lectures, communicating high expectations, and grading submissions, all while engaging meaningfully with students inside and outside the classroom.

Any discussion of managing large classes will touch upon digital resources and tools that allow us to save time without compromising quality. At this event, I anticipate that we will also discuss ways to personalize feedback and strategies for creating engaging and interactive learning experiences for our students. Many of us have been teaching with the help of Gradescope, and we expect to explore (and explain) that tool during this forum.

The welcome insights and solutions will come mostly from the faculty who participate. Sometimes at these forums we turn to familiar ringers, while at other times we hear from new speakers with new ideas. The spirit of collaboration and improvisation keeps all of us on our toes – you never know what you might learn.

Our colleague Barbara Mills from the Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE) shared this helpful resource:  “Here in the CEE grading room (1313 The Grove) we offer a test scanning service, by appointment. Also, we have assembled some tips for using Gradescope. The online appointment form and the Gradescope resources sheet are both accessible here: https://cee.ucdavis.edu/learning-teaching/test-scoring.”

This February 21st Zoom event will be recorded with the recording to be shared the subsequent week on The Wheel. That said, we hope you can join us synchronously so we can benefit from hearing your questions or perspectives.

Happy Valentine’s Day! We hope you’ll share your love of teaching with us on February 21.
