Join us for the first DOLCE of the fall!

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

Welcome back to another fall of teaching and of ATS faculty support forums at UC Davis.

At noon on every first and third Friday of the month during the school year, Academic Technology Services hosts faculty forums on teaching and instructional technology topics that will introduce you to the innovative teaching practices of our colleagues, and highlight a community of support that will help to improve your teaching at UC Davis.

Our first fall event, a DOLCE meeting that takes place this coming Friday, October 7, at noon via Zoom, will feature four speakers, two of them faculty. We hope you will join us.

Ian Korf, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, will speak on this provocative topic: “Dual mode doesn’t exist, but we do it anyway.” We might think of the transition from remote to in-person instruction as being complete, but many of us continue to deploy the tools (and navigate the student expectations) associated with dual-mode instruction. Korf was an active participant in this year’s Summer Institute on Teaching and Technology.

Heather J. Hether, Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Communication, will speak on a new podcasting project that she will soon be launching. Many faculty are increasingly turning to audio, either from our lectures or as a stand-alone resource, to complement what students get to experience in the classroom. Professor Hether presented a well-received asynchronous talk at SITT 2022.

Speaking of capturing what we share in the classroom, Todd Van Zandt, the ATS Manager of Teaching and Learning Technology Services, will speak briefly about the changing face of lecture capture at UC Davis. Todd also oversees the instructional technologists who support UC Davis Canvas and other teaching tools.

Finally, Joshua Hori, the ATS Accessibility Coordinator, will preview for us the 2022 Disability Awareness Symposium, taking place on Wednesday, October 12 from 11-2 in the Student Community Center, also viewable via Zoom.

In addition to the information and insights that we gain from our colleagues at events such as Friday’s DOLCE, we also meet and converse about teaching with often new colleagues from across the disciplines. Please add Friday’s noon meeting to your calendar, and plan to benefit from and perhaps participate in the conversation.

Friday’s DOLCE will be recorded for future review, though I hope to see you in the Zoom room when we gather at noon.
