June 4 DOLCE

Invitation to June 4, 2021 DOLCE

Dear Colleagues,

I’m writing to invite you to our last DOLCE (Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education) event of the school year. We hope you can join us remotely on Friday, June 4th at noon to learn about approaches to assessing our students. This event will be recorded.

Dr. Debbie Fetter, Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Nutrition, teaches Nutrition 10, one of the highest enrollment classes offered at UC Davis. As many of us have discovered at forums, presentations, and a recorded talk at last year’s Summer Institute on Teaching and Technology, Dr. Fetter is always seeking new and innovative ways to inform, engage with, and inspire her Nutrition students.

This Friday, Dr. Fetter will discuss how her approach to open-book exams allows students expanded permitted activities during timed exams. By focusing on her students’ understanding of class concepts, Dr. Fetter has found that her approach to assessments (including a variety of types of questions) has diminished the stress her students feel when preparing for and taking her exams, and has eased faculty and student concerns about academic integrity.

“Dr. Fetter will discuss how her approach to “open-book exams” allows students flexibility regarding how they spend their time during her timed exams and additional opportunities to showcase their level of understanding through various question types.

Staying with the theme of effective assessments, Dr. Patricia Turner is an Education Specialist at the UC Davis Center for Educational Effectiveness, and Dr. Margaret Merrill, Senior Instructional Consultant at the Academic Technology Services, will explore several types of assignments and assessments designed to enhance student engagement with content. They will also discuss the technologies that can help instructors create such effective types of assignments and provide students with essential feedback that leads to enhanced learning.

Join us this Friday June 4th at noon via Zoom.

Best,

Dr. Andy Jones
Academic Associate Director of Academic Technology Services
University of California, Davis

P.S. Please mark your calendars now for the remotely-held 2021 Summer Institute on Teaching and Technology. SITT 2021: “Bouncing Back: Flexible Teaching in a Year of Recovery” will take place on September 9 and 10. Thanks to all of you who have submitted proposals!
