The June DOLCE 2021 Recording is Available Now

Dear  Faculty colleagues,

Thanks to all who joined us on June 4 for our last DOLCE event of the academic year. Our featured speakers included Dr. Debbie Fetter, Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Nutrition, Dr. Patricia Turner, Education Specialist at the UC Davis Center for Educational Effectiveness, and Dr. Margaret Merrill, Senior Instructional Designer at Academic Technology Services. Our three speakers discussed creative ways of designing assignments and assessments to enhance student engagement with course content. The video recording of the June DOLCE is now available.

Dr. Fetter told us the story of moving from proctored exams to open-book exams, while maintaining a focus on learning and academic integrity. Because her students focused on analyzing content rather than primarily memorizing facts, Dr. Fetter and her students found the assessment process to be less stressful and more practical and applicable than previous exams that were overseen by proctors.

Dr. Patricia Turner and Dr. Margaret Merrill shared several types of alternative assessments. To enhance student engagement with course content, they suggested moving away from high-stakes summative exam formats in favor of low-stakes frequent assessments. With a focus on offering more writing assessments, Dr. Merrill demonstrated how rubrics and speed grading tools in UCDavis Canvas can help instructors briskly and productively provide feedback and grades.

Our June DOLCE concludes ATS events for the storied 2020-2021 academic year. We look forward to seeing you at SITT (The Summer Institute on Teaching with Technology) on September 9-10. Save the date!
