Encouraging engagement and creative responses from students whose backgrounds vary poses challenges to the design of a classroom experience. Although non-linear teaching approaches can be especially powerful tools to evoke creative response, students trained in traditional classroom environments often respond with fear or confusion when they encounter non-linear thought or activity.

About the Interviewee

James Housefield is Associate Professor of Design and Affiliated Faculty in Art History whose research focuses on the variety of ways we design experiences. A curator and author of the monograph Playing with Earth and Sky: Astronomy, Geography, and the Art of Marcel Duchamp (Dartmouth, 2016), he continues to research the histories of design, modern art, and their intersections. Dr. Housefield received the UC Davis ASUCD Excellence in Education award for the Division of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies in 2011, and the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Excellence Award in 2019.
