SITT 2019: Building in Active Learning SITT 2019: Building in Active Learning

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

Academic Technology Services staff -- our instructional designers, instructional technologists, and media production experts -- join me in inviting all UC Davis faculty to the 2019 Summer Institute on Teaching and Technology (SITT). With a nod to the new Teaching and Learning Complex coming in 2022, which will include multiple classrooms configured for innovative and active learning, we’ve chosen as our SITT theme "Building in Active Learning." Faculty presenters will focus on pedagogical strategies, best practices with UC Davis Canvas, data-driven teaching, hybrid and online classes, active learning with technology, and more.

Having attended SITT every year since the mid-1990s, I’ve come to appreciate all the teaching and learning wisdom that I have gained from our faculty colleagues in different disciplines. I find it fascinating to see how our different approaches reflect our individual teaching styles, facility with emerging and established instructional technologies, or approaches to teaching large classes. I hope you will find yourself similarly intrigued by the presentations and conversations that take place at this year's SITT.

This year our keynote speaker will be visiting us from the Pennsylvania State University World Campus. Check out the accomplishments of Dr. Karen Pollack: “Dr. Karen Pollack is the Associate Vice Provost for Online Education at the Penn State World Campus, where she is responsible for leading the development and delivery of more than 160 online programs. Pollack has been with the World Campus since its launch in 1998. She received her B.A. in journalism, her M.A. in telecommunication studies, and her Ph.D. in instructional systems from the Pennsylvania State University. In addition to serving her campus as Associate Vice Provost, Pollack is an affiliate faculty member of learning performance systems.

Given her dedication to serving students via educational technology and online programs, we eagerly anticipate Dr. Pollack’s keynote address at SITT 2019.

If you are interested in attending the keynote address and other presentations, breakout sessions, forums with new faculty friends, and a hosted lunch at nearby Tercero Dining Commons, please complete the registration form (https://forms.gle/y9ANfjYNabuVsbrH6) to this no-cost event. As space will be limited, registration priority will be given to those who register early. Additional details will be sent closer to the date of the event to those who register.

Also, please remember, the deadline for submitting proposals for faculty microtalk presentations is this Friday, May 24th. Please visit this invitation to propose your short presentation (or use this link: https://forms.gle/CtmYt65Z1FJHaEjMA.

On behalf of the SITT planning committee, I look forward to seeing you all at SITT 2019 on September 13th in 3 Kleiber.

Dr. Andy Jones
