Audio and Video from the March 6th DOLCE: Hosting Lively Webinars and Individualizing Flipped Classrooms

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

The audio and video from the March 6th DOLCE, which seems like a lifetime ago, is available for your review. This DOLCE focused partially on teaching in an era of COVID-19. We hope the discussion from the most recent in-person DOLCE can help you as you consider ways in which to teach your courses remotely for Spring quarter.

Sara Dye, Plant Pathology, presented her talk “Hosting Lively and Interactive Webinars.” Her humorous talk provides helpful tips for hosting interactive webinars/meetings via Zoom. Her practical tips include:

  • Offer enticement to students to attend.
  • Mute all participants (so there is not a cacophony of cats or coughs)
  • Make use of the chat feature in Zoom - students love it!
  • Don’t require students to turn on their webcam (students have bad hair days too), but realize that the class will feel more engaging when webcams are used.
  • Begin the webinar using the polling feature in Zoom (integrate fun questions, too!).
  • Exercise patience when confronted with silence … people will talk eventually.

Greg Pasternack, Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources, then presented his talk “Challenges and Opportunities with Individualizing Education in a Flipped Classroom.” He shares his strategies (and his presentation slides) about engaging students through designing their own experiments. His reflections on using flipped classrooms to encourage critical thinking are also apropos given our current teaching situation.

During these challenging times, please continue to check our Twitter page as well as the Keep Teaching website which is being updated daily to curate content to support faculty as they work to continue to support students.

Best,

Andy Jones
