March 7th DOLCE on Innovative Teaching and ETRA Awards – join us at noon via Zoom
Dear Faculty Colleagues,
You are cordially invited to join us on Friday, March 7th, at noon (via Zoom) for our March DOLCE presentations and discussion. If you are unable to join us live on Zoom, please visit The Wheel in the subsequent week to watch the recording.
We will enjoy presentations by two DOLCE speakers, Walter Leal from Molecular and Cellular Biology and Rebecca Lybrand from The Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources, both speaking about ETRA grants. Educational Technology Resource Awards (or ETRAs) are small grants available every quarter to faculty (staff resources permitting) who would benefit from the expertise of photographers, illustrators, audio engineers, videographers, and even 2-D animators in support of undergraduate classes taught at UC Davis. We love highlighting the work of our ETRA grant awardees because they do such a fine job of highlighting the work of our media teams within Academic Technology Services, and because such talks always inspire other attending faculty to apply for such grants to support their instruction. Working with pixels, pictures, and sound bytes, our ATS experts help faculty represent and record phenomena and processes that are sometimes otherwise difficult to convey.
Walter Leal has titled his talk “Enhancing Student Engagement Through Real-World Applications, Humor, Storytelling, and Interactive Learning.” A distinguished professor, Leal has been a pedagogical and media and instructional technology innovator for many years.
Rebecca Lybrand will share her experiences using Educational Technology Resource Awards (ETRAs) to develop hybrid course materials for two soil science courses rich with active learning activities in classroom and field settings. Her talk will focus on funded graphic design work for course slide development, photography (of soil specimens), and videography.
