Faculty Talk - Online Discussion

Online discussion board fosters sense of community and contributes to learning in online classes

Talitha van der Meulen

Description

To promote social interaction as well as have way to measure participation, we added a discussion board to our class. Students earn points for participation (piped automatically into the gradebook) and overall thought the discussion board was a worthy addition that contributed to their learning.

About the Presenter

Talitha hails from the Netherlands where she studied biology in Wageningen. She teaches several large classes in the department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior. She uses her diverse background in developmental biology, biochemistry of cell signaling, and diabetes to bring depth to her classes. At UC Davis, she has developed and taught several freshman seminars that serve as testing grounds for new NPB courses. She is particularly interested in bringing more students into contact with science, with the goal of nurturing not just a new generation of scientists, but also of helping the next generation of the “general public” better understand science.
