Lights, Camera, Action: Producing Practical, YouTube-Inspired Content for Higher Education
Vivian Vuong
Description
Students have grown accustomed to using YouTube videos and visual media as guides for learning new skills. Students are less inclined to “Follow the Instructions on the PDF” or “Read the Wiki-How Instructions”, even if there are screenshots and detailed instructions. In this talk I will show how I’ve adapted to creating a YouTube-like teaching video showing students the basics of Computer Aided Design and Modeling. This talk will outline the steps I took to create the video, including using OBS, on screen tools, and verbalizing each step. The video will show how I utilize OBS and the steps I take to prepare myself to give these detailed hands-on presentations.

About the Presenter
My name is Dr. Vivian Vuong, I am currently an Assistant Professor of Teaching at UC Davis in the Dept of Bio and Ag Engineering. I did my BS and PhD at UC Davis in Biological Systems Engineering. My research during my PhD was high-throughput phenotyping in processing solanaceae. During my final year as a PhD student I was given the opportunity to teach an undergraduate engineering course as the lead instructor, this further solidified my love for teaching engineering. My journey from undergrad to grad to faculty member at UC Davis has allowed me to explore many paths in engineering. Currently I teach ENG3Y - a hybrid course titled “Introduction of Engineering Design”, where students learn the engineering design process and presentation skills.
