Jane Beal shares practical and actionable ways that she proactively builds community in her online courses. Taking inspiration from the Fellowship of the Ring created in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, a primary subject in these first-year seminars, Beal builds connections, inspires group problem solving, and fosters a sense of appreciation for literary works and the communities that study them together online.

About the Interviewee
Dr. Jane Beal (PhD, University of California, Davis) is a Continuing Lecturer in the UC Davis Writing Center. She received her BA, MA, and PhD in English and her MFA in Creative Writing. At UC Davis, she has taught in English, Comparative Literature, Religious Studies, the University Writing Program, the First-Year Seminar Program, and the UC Washington Center Program in Washington, D.C. as well as the Writing Center. She is the author or editor of eight academic books as well as fifty peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. She is a prolific writer of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
