Developing Student-Driven AI Literacy Modules for the Library

The library has long served as a pedagogical leader in information literacy, equipping learners with the knowledge and skills to discover, evaluate, and ethically use information. As the information landscape has evolved—from print collections and physical records to electronic databases, the World Wide Web, and now generative artificial intelligence—libraries have continually adapted their instructional practices to prepare students for emerging technologies and changing research environments.
 

To meet the growing need for AI literacy, we developed a fully asynchronous, Canvas-importable module centered on a 45-minute learning experience, designed for integration into a wide range of Canvas courses. The module combines professionally edited instructional videos created with DaVinci Resolve and embedded formative assessments using PlayPosit to promote active learning and reinforce key concepts. Its content was informed by multiple perspectives, including AI literacy coursework, student feedback, and insights gained through the interdisciplinary Human x Machine: A Collaborative AI Learning Lab for Undergrads event, which explored how students understand, use, and critically evaluate generative AI.

About the Presenters

Erik Fausak is a health sciences librarian interested in navigating AI literacy as a part of information literacy instruction. Erik is predominantly involved in supporting the School of Veterinary Medicine and is passionate about evidence-based veterinary medicine.

Melinda M. Livas is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subject specialist librarian, responsible for instruction, outreach, and reference services targeting undergraduate and professional student researchers. As both a librarian and practicing instructional designer, she integrates instructional design principles into her teaching and content creation processes.

Rayan Mansoor is a second-year Electrical Engineering student and a member of the inaugural cohort of student interns at Shields Library. Selected for his strong curiosity and eagerness to learn, he worked in the Student Services department under the mentorship of Melinda and Erik, contributing to instructional design and AI literacy initiatives.

Before UC Davis, Rayan gained experience communicating STEM concepts through Wingspan, the student news organization at Liberty High School in Frisco, Texas, where he created content for a broad student audience. At UC Davis, he has continued to expand these interests as an active member of the student-run Davis Data Science Club.

His experience in STEM communication, combined with his passion for data science and artificial intelligence, made him an excellent fit for this project. Rayan played a key role in developing a fully asynchronous AI literacy module that can be imported into any Canvas course, helping make AI literacy instruction more engaging, scalable, and accessible across disciplines.
