We will hear first from Dr. Lisa Oakes and Shannon Klotz from Psychology as they present “Perusall: It’s not just for making students read the text.”
Lisa Oakes and Shannon Klotz have used Perusall for many purposes in their teaching, including for ensuring that students read before coming to class, encouraging collaborative reading, getting feedback on an early draft of a textbook, and replacing group project work for a fully online asynchronous class. In this presentation, Oakes and Klotz will review some of these use cases, describing their pedagogical goals, student reactions, and Perusall experiments that mostly worked.
Lisa Oakes is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology. Shannon Klotz is PhD Candidate in Psychology.
We will also hear a talk by Writing Center Lecturer Dr. Katie Evans titled “Co-creating a course AI Use Policy: Harnessing student agency to encourage critical AI use and an atmosphere of disclosure.”
For two quarters now, Writing Center lecturer Dr. Katie Evans has facilitated the co-creation of an AI Use Policy for her sections of UWP 102E: Writing in the Disciplines – Engineering. In this talk, she will explain the motivation for and development of a student-driven AI Policy, as well as the practical procedure for enacting it in the (writing) classroom. She includes personal reflection and student testimony on the generally positive atmosphere generated through the activity, including more visible critical thinking about and open disclosure of AI use that enriched student learning experiences and enhanced student-instructor relationships. Evans will problematize the workload and complexities of developing and enforcing such a policy – but in the end, she argues that it is worth it.
