Tim Hyde on Teaching Distributed Workshops with Otter: A SITT Interview with Dr. Andy

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

Please check out our SITT 2022 interview with Timothy Hyde from Art Studio!

As a teaser for the 2022 Summer Institute on Teaching and Technology, we are posting a series of Wheel articles showcasing interviews with faculty and staff on the theme of this year's SITT, "Unmuting our Students." The sixth of our interviews features Timothy Hyde, expert photographer and assistant professor of Art Studio at UC Davis. Hyde uses new tools such as Otter.ai and Miro to encourage his students to workshop photographs in small groups while earning credit for the conversation, something Hyde can assess via transcripts recorded by Otter.

In this interview, Timothy Hyde discusses the challenges of getting students to critique and workshop each other's work as photographers and artists. Borrowing an approach made familiar by our time teaching with Zoom, Hyde uses breakout rooms to encourage students to discuss artistic techniques free from the intimidation and judgment of the looming professor. By giving feedback on discussions recorded by Otter, Hyde can offer personalized feedback while encouraging students also to benefit from collaboration, working in small groups, and harnessing the power of peer pressure to do good work.

We invite you to review the full interview with Timothy Hyde!

As the SITT website is now live, please sign up now for live talks and start to review the on-demand content. We will have speakers, panels, and forums for attendee participation. Also, please contact us if you know a perhaps new (or new to SITT) colleague whom we could contact directly to invite to join us. We hope to see you at SITT 2022!
