June 3 DOLCE about student portfolios and teaching with video

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

Please join us via Zoom on Friday, June 3rd at noon, for the last DOLCE of the academic year. 

Keith David Watenpaugh will join us to speak about The Article 26 Backpack: The Universal Human Rights Tool for Academic Mobility. The Article 26 Backpack provides a means and location for students and young people to electronically store documents that they wish to share with schools or employers. The Backpack is currently offered to students affected by war, economic conditions, and other similar hardships. Join us to hear about this important project, made all the more relevant by this year’s conflicts in Europe and elsewhere. We may also discuss ways that all our students can seek to “capture” the work they do in our classes so that they can share that work with future academic and work audiences. Professor Watenpaugh is the founding director of the Human Rights Studies Program, the first academic unit of its kind in the University of California system.

We will also be joined at Friday's DOLCE by James Carey, Distinguished Professor of Entomology and senior scholar in the Center for the Economics and Demography of Aging at UC Berkeley. A longtime leader in innovative and effective teaching with video, Professor Carey will speak about the ambitious process of converting a physical biodemography textbook into a video guidebook that takes full advantage of Carey’s expertise as an asynchronous speaker and classroom leader. All of us will learn important lessons about effective teaching with video from Professor Carey’s remarks.
